Udûn

The Valley of Udûn

Gorgoroth

Udûn in northwestern Mordor

Udûn was a circular valley in Mordor between the Carach Angren and the Morannon, formed by a violent volcanic upheaval. A narrow valley in the northwest corner of Mordor, where the Ash Mountains met the Mountains of Shadow. The valley gradually rose in altitude from the level of the Anduin basin to the plateau of Gorgoroth. Udûn was a bleak place, without trees or beast. Caves in the steep walls and cliffs of the vale were home to small tribes of Orcs and Trolls who (ca. T.A. 1640) somehow manage to avoid Gondor's patrols.
At one end of the valley was Cirith Gorgor and the Black Gate of Mordor (Morannon); at the other end of the valley was the narrow pass called Carach Angren (Isenmouthe). There were many Orc-holds, armouries and tunnels in the mountains on either side of the valley, used by the troops guarding the Black Gate, during the times of Sauron's control.
