The Regmyl (S."Demon-Slaves") were lesser demons or spirits of shadow and flame that had served Morgoth - and perhaps later Sauron - and had been enslaved by the will of a greater Balrog. They possessed little will on their own and existed merely as secessions of their masters' own essence. Wherever a Balrog once was, it could be wagered that a Rogmul or two were not far away.

History[]

When Arda was still young, Morgoth had gathered many of those among the lesser orders of the Maiar or other spirits from the Outer Void to his side after the fortresses of Utumno and Angband had arisen. The greater among those were the Balrog-lords, seconded by the Regmyl who are or were often their servants. The latter were some of Morgoth's most fearsome warriors and commanders of hosts, binding the Orcs to their will much as they themselves had been by the Balrogs, though they more commonly appeared as armed escorts to their superiors on the battlefield.

Following the War of Wrath, many of the Regmyl followed the surviving Balrog-lords or other greater demons into the dark crevices of the earth, while a few others evaded the victors by fleeing into southern regions such as Harad. Far from the sight of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, they merely guarded their dormant masters in their lairs from any intrusion throughout the ages.

Many Regmyl, however, had eventually found a new purpose under Sauron and served him by the time of the Third Age. These were notably part of the forces which he used to strike against the Free Peoples from Angmar and Mordor, with the lesser ones being frequently placed under the command of one of his chief deputies. Most of those that fought for him in the War of the Ring would meet their end at the hands of his enemies' valiant champions, a fate also shared by those encountered where a Balrog once resided or who had established their own petty realms, though some at least escaped the downfall of a Dark Lord a second time and continued to do evil wherever they were
