Mail was delivered by professionals; the Shire-mail or similar organisations in particular.Letters intended to be delivered from village to village were typically attached to mileposts and hitching posts so the carrier needed not get down from his pony. One feature of the later Shire was a formal posting service, supervised by the Mayor of Michel Delving and paid for by paper stamps glued to each letter. In Breeland every small town had a "mailbox" and letters and messages were delivered by a small toop of horsemen, the Breeland Riders. Many of the lands formerly ruled by the Dúnedain knew similar institutions. Some peoples in Eriador,Gondor or Rhovanion also had written messages delivered by tamed birds, especially doves, ravens or falcons.Outside the Westlands messages were often delivered by message-shouters, drummers or couriers or given to travellers or caravans and no other formal post-services were known.
