The otravati (Ap. "poison") was small snake found in western Harad. Rarely exceeding two feet in length, it had a murky grey coloring and was easy to overlook. It was, however, not an animal to take lightly. The otravati's narrow head opened to reveal a surprisingly large mouth full of tiny needlelike teeth. Each tooth was an injector that delivered a dose of the snake's poison on any successful bite.

Locals considered amputation to be the only effective remedy when confronted by the snake's potent venom. A nerve poison, it attackerd through the bloodstream and the nervous system simultaneously. The venom was lethal within one hour. Only immediate removal of the bitten member would serve as a cure. It was no wonder that the snake bore a name which translated as "poison".
