Midwinter was a widespread holiday in Middle-Earth.The Elves called the two days between the End of a year and the beginning of a new year mettarë and yestarë, while the elvish year started in Spring the Dúnedain took over the elven terms but continued to start their new year in Winter so Mettarë and Yestare became the names of the two days of the beginning and end of the Winter-solstice.

In Eriador Midwinter was also known as Yule while the Northmen of Rhovanion called it Iúl, Iól or Geol.
