Lungorthin (S.:"Pale Temple") was the the second of the Balrog-lords, the seven great princes of Hell, as well as the captain of Morgoth's personal bodyguard in Angband being second only to Gothmog.

History (N)[]

One of the Maiar that Morgoth had ensnared in the days of his glory and morphed into one of his twisted followers, the white Lungorthin was one of his master's foremost generals, being the second greatest Balrog in both power and position after Gothmog the High-Captain of Angband. In charge of Morgoth's guard at his fortress, he was required to command the offense and defense during the Battle of Unnumbered Tears as one of the Black Enemy's chief captains. Some accounts go as far as claiming that it was Lungorthin who helped break the ranks of the Union of Maedhros once the tide was turned and that he personally captured Húrin Thalion, hauling him in chains at the feet of Morgoth - though most say it was none other than Gothmog himself who did those deeds.

He would much later be part of the host that Morgoth sent upon Gondolin, but survived the ensuing skirmish between the Black Enemy's hordes and the valiant Noldor. With the slaying of Gothmog during the attack, Lungorthin would assume many of his duties effectively filling in for the lost High-Captain of Angband. He fought for Morgoth in the War of Wrath and is believed to have vanquished by the Host of the West along with most of his master's forces. How exactly did he perish is uncertain, but according to legend he likely met his end at the hands of the Adan-lord Olorakhor.
