The "Mouth of Sauron" - Sauron's black-robed personal ambassador

"I am the Mouth of Sauron."
― Mordú

The "Mouth of Sauron" (S: Lammen Gorthaur) - called the "Mouth of Tar-Mairon" (S: Lammen Aran-Mairon) in the title's inception - was traditionally the position held by the highest mortal servant of Sauron. The Mouth was the Dark Lord's personal emissary which acted as a voice to his lesser subjects, his adversaries and neutral parties alike, as well as the honorary High-Priest of the Cult of the Eye and therefore one of the most important constituents of the Black Council. Every decade Sauron chose a mortal from among the Gúrzyul, his most devoted Black Númenórean minions, who sacrificed their own voice to their master and become the vessel for the Unbodied named Dulgabêth, so that the houseless spirit could "mouth" the Dark Lord's will through his host.

In the aftermath of Sauron's first overthrowing, the Mouths would do the bidding of the Dark Lord with the utmost secrecy while he was regaining his spent strength in the far East and later in Dol Guldur, before eventually resuming a place of significant power within Mordor's hierarchy when the Enemy revealed himself openly once more. The Downfall of Sauron, however, meant also an apparent end to the line of the Mouths with the ambiguous death of Mordú, though other rumors abound that Dulgabêth and his vessels still serve the memory of the Dark Lords by bringing trouble to the realm of Gondor and its allies.

Notes[]

In MERP the Mouth is a Sorcerer from the second Age who artificially prolonged his life while in LOTRO he is one of the Gurzyul. This both contradicts the books where it is clearly stated that the Mouth was a living man.The Problem has been solved here by making the Mouth rather a Title or Position than an individual, so there may have been several different mouths throughout Sauron's reign.
