Grishnakh

Grishnákh

Grishnákh (Or."Blood-Greedy") was among the oldest and highest-ranking Orc-Captains of Barad-dûr. He was likely born about the time of the second setting forth of Bilbo Baggins, for he seemed to have been active in the Dark Tower for many years, possessing knowledge of political and military events beyond the usual wont for Orcs. Being an inhabitant of Barad-Dûr, he was but a stout fighting-Orc of all but middle height, but with his was sly scheming and intelligence increased with age, the wicked creature rose to the lofty position of the Lord of the Nazgûl's half-trusted personal agent and messenger, giving him more or less the authority of a high-chieftain among his kind.

Grishnákh's long work in the Nazgûl's service often entailed unusual participation in the lofty deeds of the Dark Lord, from observing meetings of the Black Council to overseeing tortures in Sauron's chambers. This is how he personally encountered Gollum, and of him discovered the legacy of The One Ring. Afterwards he became lustful for the treasure, and sought to gain the Ash Nazg for himself. He was quite pleased, therefore, when he was instructed by the Nazgûl himself to set forth with his tribe and seek for the Company of the Ring, when they had been recorded passing through the Misty Mountains and lodging in Lórien. He led his band fiercely, coordinated by the Nazgûl and following the trail of his Fell-mount. His band assailed the Company by the Anduin, but it was not until they came to Parth Galen that they managed to cross it and capture two of its Hobbits; the Hobbit-boy Peregrin Took and his cousin Meriadoc Brandybuck. And when they did this, they were deterred by the Uruk-hai of Isengard, who themselves were hunting for the same target, but with less knowledge. Grishnákh submitted to the will of their chief Uglúk, and led his company alongside, hoping to betray his masters and take the Ring for himself. He nearly succeeded, but by the cleverness of his Hobbit-prisoners, he dug his own grave with his greed, dragging them off away from the security of his band, and he was foiled and slain by watching soldiers of Rohan, soon followed by his entire band.
