Born among the Bear-Easterlings of the Wágath and allowed to learn magic, Ethacali quickly became frustrated by the limited knowledge his tribe had. He departed to find greater teachers, following a path that led him to the Orc-holds on the borders of Mordor, thence to the lair of the Necromancer, and finally to Carn Dûm in Angmar.

Propelled by his tireless and quenchless search for arcane knowledge, his complete detachment from any sense of morality, and his uncanny knack of picking the winning side in the endless internecine power struggles in the counsels of Darkness, Ethacali had rised rapidly in the ranks of evil. Although far from the most powerful, Ethacali was among the Witch-king’s favorite henchmen.

Notes[]

  • The MERP module calls Ethacali's tribe, the "Logath", however inmother MERP publications these are known as the "Horse-Easterlings", not "Bear-Easterlings".Also given the date of the midule, 1409, the Logath probably are a bit too early.Innthis article they have been replaced by the "Waagath", mentioned in the "Mirkwood" module, an earlier tribe, possibly ancestors of the Logath.
  • The MEPBM used "Ethacali" as a character for both it's 1650 and it's 2950 scenarios.Seemingly Ethacali survived and was able to stretch his life artificially for quite some time, or he became undead or, more likely, at last the 2950 Ethacali is an entirely different character who just bears the same name (his character portrait in the game also bears little resemblence to the dark mage of Rhudaur!).
