Most famed of the Dwarf-Chieftains of Belegost, Azaghâl (Kh. "War-Wager," Rh. Herjin) was the eldest son of King Dwalin the Wise, Lord of the Third House of the Naugrim. As his father's heir and lord of his city, he led the his people nobly and wisely, restraining them from ill deeds and maintaining political stability amongst his folk. He was a friend of the Noldor, chiefly the Sons of Feänor under Maedhros the Tall, and aided they and their allies in the struggle against Morgoth during the First Age. Azaghâl led the Host of Gabilgathol in the the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the "Battle of Unnumbered Tears" (1.A. 472), and there his folk encountered the paternal Dragon Glaurung. Glaurung slew Azaghâl in the disastrous fray, but the brave Dwarf, with his stout and well-armed people, succeeded in gravely wounding the huge Worm, driving him out of the battle. He was carried from the battlefield in honor, and his folk removed from the war afterwards.
